The Daily Beast Interviews Catherine Hardwicke

Image
10 years after twilight , director Catherine Hardwicke opens up to The Daily Beast on new details on the film, some we've never known before. Ten years ago, the Twilight film franchise was an unknown quantity. In fact, Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first Twilight, was surrounded by film executives who all but expected the vampire flick to fail. “Nobody thought this is a big, blockbuster franchise,” Hardwicke tells the Daily Beast. “There were very low expectations for Twilight, because every other studio had turned it down. They said, OK, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was a very popular book for girls, and it made $39 million. That’s it. We don’t know if this could ever make us any more than that, so we don’t really want to spend more than that. The expectations were low literally up to opening weekend.” “Why do you think I got the job?” she laughs now. “Why do you think they hired a female director? If they thought it was going to be a big blockbu...

It's Twilight Month, and our birthday!!!!

Image
One of the casts' earliest magazine photo spread! This is a historic month in our fandom! 10 years ago, the pop-culture phenomenon known as the twilight saga began with a little-known indie film called twilight . And then all hell broke loose. The actors became stars. The books flew off shelves. The movies hit the box office worldwide. and this little-known (still is) blog was born (p/s check out my very first post here !) I know that the fandom isn't exactly as alive as it was years ago, but I'm always so happy to see the posts still gets views (either by accident, random viewers, or people do actually click on the links!!). I have to apologise for this blog not being so alive as it was back then, and I try to update as frequent as possible.  For the ones who have stuck around with this blog for the longest time, thank you. For fellow friends and Twilighters in the fandom, the love is still there. If you're a fellow Malaysian, and still check ...

#Throwback: 27th November, 2008!

Image
27th November, 2008. The day we, Malaysians, had our first taste of the pop culture phenomenon we call Twilight. It was 8 years ago when the craze swept the nation, and thus we became emotionally invested in Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, Jacob Black, the Cullen clan, the Quileute shapeshifters, the Swan family, and the entire universe of sparkling vampires. This unorthodox vampire movie, based on the novel written by Stephenie Meyer (#Queen), introduced us then-quite-unknown actors like Robert Pattinson (who has quite a career after this one, besides being in Harry Potter before Twilight, and also a Teen Choice Award winner), Kristen Stewart (An outstanding film career, and a Cesar Award winner) and Taylor Lautner (he's on TV, and also an MTV Movie Award winner). We also got to say hi to many more actors along the way throughout the entire 4-movie saga, some iconic ones, like Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dakota Fanning (but we all already know her), Charlie Bewley, Nik...

Twilight Pop Funkos Finally Exists

Image
If you're a fan of Pop Funkos, or things that you can collect, then this Twilight-themed collection is a must! Fall in love again with Edward, Bella, Jacob, and Jane as they continue their epic saga as Pop! figures. Edward is available in multiple versions including his gray pea coat and wedding tuxedo, and Bella is available in her vampire form and wedding dress. Also coming this fall are Jane and Jacob rounding out the Twilight collection. And look for these awesome retail exclusives including Edward in Vampire form (only at Barnes & Noble) and sparkle Edward (only at Hot Topic). It's coming in September, and I assume it will be on Amazon.com or something. I want one of Edward in his pea coat, Edward in his wedding tux, and Bella in her wedding dress! But why do they all look so angry, though? via Twilight Lexicon , Funko

Catherine Hardwicke Share Twilight's Secrets

I missed this post from Buzzfeed from November 2015, so sorry about that. Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight , share some secrets about the film in an interview with BuzzFeed News. Among them include: - No one wanted to adapt Twilight, the first in the series of Stephenie Meyers’ vampire novels. - Having cast Stewart and Robert Pattinson, Hardwicke watched the “frenzy” that developed around them feeling somewhat “guilty.” See the full list here . She also discusses on lessons she learnt from filming the movie, as well as on her experience of gender bias in Hollywood and the film industry. Read the full interview here . via BuzzFeed News

Stephenie Meyer Announces New Twilight Retelling

Image
Twilight is getting a makeover, in a form of a gender-swapped retelling of the story! The new book is titled " Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined ", and sees Edward and Bella's gender reversed. In honor of the 10th anniversary of her best-selling vampire romance, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has written a 442-page reimagining of the novel that made her a publishing sensation. This time around, she’s switched the genders of her protagonists. Yes, it’s true. In the new tale titled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, Bella Swan is now a boy named Beau (short for Beaufort) and the brooding Edward Cullen is now Edythe. Meyer is expected to discuss the project in more detail during an appearance Tuesday morning on Good Morning America. Read the entire article on EW . The book will be released in the States on Tuesday (not sure today, or next Tuesday, 13th October) in hardcover and ebook. I'll update the blog when the book's on sale locally. Looks like we ...

'The Storytellers: New Voices of the Twilight Saga' Project Launched

Image
A new contest is launched in conjunction with The Storytellers: New Voices of the Twilight Saga, "The Storytellers — New Voices of The Twilight Saga" was motivated by the desire to provide new female voices with an opportunity to be heard. All of us at Lionsgate, Tongal, Facebook, Volvo Cars, and Women In Film, along with Stephenie Meyer, are enormously excited about this endeavor, and have come together to create a forum for you to exchange creative ideas in support of each other’s visions. We encourage you to be inventive. Just because the movies interpreted the books one way, it doesn’t mean other new ideas won’t be equally as wonderful.  Our choice to bring this opportunity to female writers and directors addresses a larger need for more content by, for, and about women. As you join the world of The Twilight Saga’s new creative voices, have fun and think with your heart. You are the storytellers. We are here to listen to you. And we can’t wait! Five new Short Fil...

Coming Soon to Facebook: New Twilight Short Films

Image
It's a revival! Twilight will be having another moment in the pop culture spotlight (as if it ever left!), thanks to a new announcement by Lions Gate (current owner of Summit). The New York Times reports: Lions Gate and Stephenie Meyer, the creator of the vampires-and-werewolves “Twilight” saga, on Tuesday announced plans to select five aspiring female directors to make short films based on “Twilight” characters. The mini-movies, financed by Lions Gate and its production partners, will be shown exclusively on Facebook next year. The short film series, called “The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of ‘The Twilight Saga,’ ” has the backing of Women in Film, an organization devoted in part to ending a shortage of female directors. While not overtly championed by Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, the initiative could be viewed in the context of her “Lean In” efforts to empower women in the workplace.

Closure for The Forgotten

Image
Hi fellow Twilighters! First off, I apologise for the much slack in updates for this blog. We all know there's nothing much happening in Twilight World anymore these days. Even Stephenie Meyer is sorta over it. So, what should I do with this blog? Keep it, or delete it? I felt that this blog need a closure. A sort of a thank-you note for everyone that have stuck around to comment, vote, view, read, criticise, etc. So here goes.

Stephenie Meyer Still Appreciate Twilighters

The apparent quote that Stephenie Meyer is over Twilight has struck a nerve in the Twilight community. She said this in the Variety interview. DM: What about a return to “Twilight?” SM: I get further away every day. I am so over it. For me, it’s not a happy place to be. DM: Is the door completely closed on that? SM: Not completely. What I would probably do is three paragraphs on my blog saying which of the characters died. I’m interested in spending time in other worlds, like Middle-Earth. To clear up any misunderstandings, Stephenie took to her official blog to clear it up. Even those of you who love Twilight the most (in fact, especially those who love it the most) have probably noticed that there's been just a teensy little bit of backlash following the success of the books and films. I try my hardest to be thick-skinned, but I'm not much better at that than I am at brevity. So when I speak of Twilight becoming a negative place for me, it is entirely that...

Happy Birthday, Twilight!

Image
June 2, 2003 marks the day that our fav vampire story came to life, which makes today the birthday of Twilight !! As Stephenie Meyer explains it, it all came to her in a from of a dream: I know the exact date that I began writing Twilight, because it was also the first day of swim lessons for my kids. So I can say with certainty that it all started on June 2, 2003. Up to this point, I had not written anything besides a few chapters (of other stories) that I never got very far on, and nothing at all since the birth of my first son, six years earlier. I woke up (on that June 2nd) from a very vivid dream. In my dream, two people were having an intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the sce...
