Chris Weitz talks Rob, Edward, Deletd Scens with Sweepstakes Winner

Twilight's official Twitter, @ Twilight recently had a sweepstakes contest, and the winner, JennyBRUTAL, won! Her prize was a phone interview with New Moon director Chris Weitz! Finally, there's an explanation fornthe dark silver Volvo! How nerve-racking was it to know you had to relocate several location for New Moon? It was really nerve-racking because I thought people would notice and be upset, it was a puzzle to get it just right. The outside of the school is all CGI, we built the stairway for the school and took stills. In the Cullen's house I also tried to show different rooms in the house to add to the feeling of the house. When Taylor was traveling during Twilight a fan gave him a hand-carved Native American ornament. We used that ornament in Jacob's room in New Moon. I know Edward's car is now a dark silver, but was there any reason for the change? Availability. Volvo wanted to introduce a new car into the series, instead of the older model. So the...

Chris Weitz's production notes

Image
As a thank you to fans, @Twilight gave us a peek into director Chris Weitz's production notes from the Montepulciano shoot. Montepulciano Set We will be using the town of Montepulciano to serve as Volterra. We scouted about ten Italian hilltowns, and Montepulciano offered the best combination of beauty, age, change in height (you can see rolling fields below from the alleys running up to the main square, etc.) and symmetry that satisfied my obsessive qualities. Why not finish off this roundup with a little Italian scenery: This is the clock tower of the main square of Montepulciano. Directly underneath is where Edward intends to reveal himself to the crowd (I prefer that to an alley way – that would be too blah and ordinary). The cafe on the very right of the shot was THE hangout for Twi-fans who went to Montepulciano -- people would sit up there and order coffees for the whole day to get a close look at filming! This is what Bella sees as she finishes her run upwards and ar...

New Chris Weitz interview

Image
Box Office has a new interview with Chris Weitz, and he talks about New Moon. How do you direct a film when everyone knows the story and ending? In a way, that's an advantage. That people know and love the book means that people know and want to see the movie, which is what you hope for when you're making a film. It's a fine balance between being as faithful as possible to the spirit of the book, and bringing changes. I regard myself as fan as much as any other, and the way that I see the book in my head is just like any other fan's ability, except that I happen to have tens of millions of dollars at my disposal to realize that vision. One hopes that it's a strong enough envisioning of the book that people will be amused and entertained and excited even though they know how things are going to end. One of my favorite New Moon conspiracy theories is that the producers are ordering Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to keep their love hidden because it will aff...

Fansite Fridays: Chris Weitz interview part 2

Twilight Lexicon posted up the 2nd part of their Fansite Friday interview with Chris Weitz. Q: I’m wondering since you’re so good with CGI, and it’s your forte, how’s the design for the werewolves coming? Chris: I think it’s going to be good. We’re taking Stephenie’s lead really they’re supposed to be wolves the size of horses. The temptation…we’ve avoided any temptation to kind of go Lon Chaney with it, or to make it kind of humanoid. The werewolves are very much creatures of nature. Phil Tippet is doing the …it’s not me, I’m not the one who’s good at doing CGI I just happened to have lucked into working with people who are very good at it. So, I just know a good thing when I see it, and Phil Tippet who is a multi-Oscared guy (ILM) worked on Stars Wars and all that stuff is doing the wolves, and they’re going to be great. They’re going to be fantastic. So and at the same time they are going to fit that world that’s already there. You can’t suddenly hop out of reality. Somehow ...

Fansite Fridays: Chris Weitz interview

Image
Sorry, guys... this post was days late. Fansites who got a chance to visit the New Moon set, including Twilighters Anonymous , got an interiew with Chris Weitz. Here's a snippet from it. How is the transition from your version to Catherine Hardwicke’s film? Sometimes when directors change there is a big change. You can tell from the style. What kind of style do you bring to this film? Chris: I think the biggest change would be that I am a bit of an old fogy. I’m old-fashioned and I think Catherine is very “fashion forward” and conscious of a pop sensibility. I am more tied to the old-fashioned romantic films. So that would be, if you were a film nerd, you would notice the palate of the film, the camera work. I am a lot less likely to use hand-held cameras than Catherine Hardwicke is. Things like that, they are more stylistic differences than my kind of “taking it and throwing it away.” Obviously I owe her a lot, because she cast this great cast [so] I kind of inherited this c...

New Chris Weitz interview with MTV

Movie Trailers - Movies Blog Chris Weitz sat down with MTV to talk more on New Moon . MTV: You revealed two scenes that were a big hit at Comic-Con. How do they fit into the movie? Chris Weitz: We showed two new scenes, and each one focused on abdominal muscles. That was the high point, I think, for the audience. [Laughs.] One scene was the one in which Jacob is teaching Bella how to ride a motorcycle. She falls, he comes to rescue her and dab her forehead — thereby revealing his bodacious abs and chest. And the other is Bella rushing to save Edward when he decides to commit suicide by revealing himself to the humans in Volterra, Italy. MTV: You're in the unenviable position of needing to stay true to the source material but also needing to find more screen time for one of the world's biggest movie stars. How did you go about doing that? Weitz: [We wanted to avoid] just randomly inserting Rob throughout the movie in a back-at-the-ranch sort of way, which would just be abo...

Chris Weitz Says Taylor Lautner 'Embodied' Jacob

Image
Chris Weitz talks to MTV about New Moon . MTV: In last year's "Twilight" movie, Stephenie Meyer had a cameo that the fans really loved. Will we see her in "New Moon"? Weitz: You have to look very carefully for it. No, she doesn't actually. If she had asked, I would have definitely put her in. But I think that she may have decided against experiencing that again, because frankly, to be an extra in a movie or a day player is a lot of sitting around. People don't realize the sheer tedium that a movie set embodies; she was probably like, "Well, I'll sit this one out." MTV: We all remember that there was a lot of drama around whether Taylor would return for "New Moon." How close did he come to not being asked back? Weitz: When I first met with him, I took off my shirt and I said, "You've got two months to look this good." And he said, "I'm willing to try that." Finally, he came back, and the r...

Chris Weitz gives new New Moon details

Image
Hitfix had an exclusive interview with Chris Weitz, director of New Moon. He revealed some pretty interesting details about the movie. *Even Weitz was surprised with how quickly Phil Tippet's company turned around the Jacob wolf shot at the end of the first teaser trailer. The shot has gone through numerous iterations and is much more photorealistic than that version. *He'll be submitting a director's cut of the film to Summit within the next two weeks. *Alexandre Desplat is currently working on the movie's score. It may include hints at Carter Burwell's original "Twilight" theme, but will sound different. *Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon are interested in contributing to the film's soundtrack. *A couple of new scenes from the film will be shown during the "New Moon" Comic-Con panel on Thursday, July 23. *The movie within a movie, "Facepunch," will only be heard -- not seen. *Shooting in Italy with all of the fans that trekked acro...

Metro CA interview Chris Weitz

Image
Metro News CA posted up a new interview with Chris Wietz. They recently interviewed Taylor Lautner. Q. “Twilight”, the first installment of the series, received some criticism for not being 100 per cent true to the book. Are you addressing some of these issues? A. It’s impossible to be completely faithful to every single page of a book because movies don’t have enough time. So you end up cutting things and combining things. But I would say that we’re definitely using the book as our bible. My take on this film is the film is the book and Stephanie Mayer is my main resource for everything in this. I’m constantly checking with her to see if it’s something a character would do or a detail is right. You can never absolutely please everybody but my main intention is to satisfy the fans of the book. Q. You’re a very visual director. What’s your vision for New Moon? A. We’ve got an amazing visual effects team. The whole idea is to use the full palette of colors, to have our shadows be ve...

New Moon cast discusses difference between Chris Weitz and Catherine Hardwicke

Image
The New Moon cast discussed on the difference between Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke and N ew Moon director Chris Weitz. Peter Facinelli told the A.T.: "When we shot Twilight, it felt like it was an indie. We were racing the clock. Catherine [Hardwicke] was fantastic, but with New Moon it felt like we had more time to play. The atmospheres were different. They were both great...in their own ways. I just think New Moon is going to be incredible." Michael Welch also told us how better prepared they were to film from day one. "When we all got on the set the first day, [Chris Weitz] gave us this packet of 30 to 40 pages of what he wanted the film to look and feel like—how he was going to shoot it, all of that stuff. The thing is, both Chris and Catherine—I don't want to say one is better than the other. They are polar opposites in terms of style. Catherine can only succeed in chaos, really. But Chris is the exact opposite; he's so calm and has all his ...

Eclipse : June 30, 2010

Image
Eclipse now has a tentative release date. Nikki Finke from Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that eclipse has been set for release on 3oth June 2010. That's about 6 months after new moon . Is there even time to shoot eclipse and new moon back-to-back? Apparently not. EW reports that Chris Weitz will not be directing eclipse . Chris Weitz will not direct the third film in the Twilight series, Eclipse, a source close to the production tells EW.com exclusively. Because New Moon, which Weitz is helming, and Eclipse are due to be released so close together (on Nov. 20, 2009, and June 30, 2010, respectively), Weitz will be in post-production on New Moon at the same time that Eclipse will be shooting. That said, the source confirms a report that the movies will not be shot simultaneously or back-to-back; there will be a brief gap between the production of both films.

Taylor Lautner will be back as Jacob

Hey twilight fans!! It's official! Taylor Lautner will be back as Jacob in new moon ! Director Chris Weitz wrote a letter to all twilight fans. Dear Twilight Fans, I'm very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in NEW MOON, and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer. The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of TWILIGHT, the book and the movie, will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in NEW MOON; and I'm looking forward to w...

a new director

Finally!! Chris Weltz has been confirmed to be directing new moon ! For those who subscribes to the official twilight newsletter, you should have gotten this in your inbox. Dear fans of Twilight, New Moon, Bella, Edward and Jacob,  In the past few days I have been involved in a whirlwind romance with Stephenie Meyers' extraordinary books.  And I am very grateful to have received her permission to protect New Moon in its translation from the page to the screen.  For fans of the books and of the film of Twilight, this may come as an unexpected twist. So I want to write briefly to try to put you at ease, and to give you reason to hope for and expect the best.  For the last decade of my career as a director, I have chosen to make adaptations of complex and involved works of literature. This has always begun with the love of a book and its characters, story, and theme; and it has always involved a respect of and responsiveness to the feelings of other people who loved those books.  Wh...
