'Twilight' Reboot A Possibility?

Rumour has it that Lionsgate (who now owns Summit) is planning a reboot of Twilight!

Bloody Disgusting first reported this rumour:

November 21, 2008. That’s what, a little less than four years ago? Since then Summit Entertainment has released four Twilight adaptations, with the fifth and final arriving on November 16. By the five year anniversary, Lionsgate, who acquired Summit back in January for $412.5 million in cash and stock, will be in serious discussions regarding the future of the Stephenie Meyer vampire/werewolf franchise. They’ll deny it, right here, right now. We’ll get plenty of eggs in our face. Sites will burn us at the stake like a witch during the Salem trials. Still, the fact will remain: it’s true. In fact, they’re already discussing it internally. It will happen. Twilight will return. It will never leave. It is eternal. Prepare to weep for another decade. It is still undecided exactly what the future of the franchise will be, though. It could be a direct remake, considering the initial saga is so poorly made, but then again it could also be a spinoff or maybe even a one-off sequel. It could be anything to keep the green bills piling high. But expect a remake. Yes, quickly. Lionsgate’s needs a fresh franchise to run alongside the Tyler Perry and Saw films that fueled them through the 00's. Now that they have Summit, and The Hunger Games franchise, revising Twilight from another studio’s perspective could be just what the doctor ordered…

Deadline Hollywood countered the report with an official statement from Summit:

Summit Entertainment just phoned to publicly deny an Internet report that its parent company Lionsgate already is drawing up plans to remake the Twilight Saga by the 5th anniversary of the insanely successful movie and book series which began November 21, 2008. Summit Co-Chairman and now Lionsgate domestic movie czar Rob Friedman tells me: ”We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support Stephanie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be the last one unless that should change.” What this statement means is simply that the studio will do whatever Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer wants. She has said in some interviews that she wouldn’t mind seeing a reboot — so an evantual remake isn’t out of the realm of possibility. But as of now none is on the drawing board.

Hmm ... this could get interesting, but seems to be mere speculation.
